DR. ZACHARIAH M. GEORGE

dr georgeZachariah M. George, M.D., is a neurosurgeon with special expertise in complex spinal surgery and minimally invasive surgery.  He also has orthopedic spine deformity training, and treats pediatric and adult deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis.

 

Dr. George uses cervical laminoplasty, total discarthroplasty (disc replacement) and dynamic stabilization techniques as alternatives to spinal fusion. He employs the latest technology in spinal interbody fusion via XLIF, DLIF and AXIA-LIF, in addition to other fusion techniques such as PLIF, TLIF and ALIF. Dr. George uses minimally invasive tubular retraction systems for very small incisions and shorter hospital stays to treat herniated discs, degenerative spinal disease and spinal tumors.

 

Dr. George received his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, a B.S. in Biology, from The University at Albany, Albany, N.Y. He obtained his medical degree from Upstate Medical University, College of Medicine, Syracuse, N.Y., where he received the excellence in scholarly research award from Alpha Omega Alpha.

 

At the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Dr. George completed his internship in the Department of Surgery, then served as resident and chief resident in the Department of Neurosurgery.  He subsequently obtained a fellowship in complex orthopedic spine surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center: Spine Institute of New York.


Dr. George conducted clinical research on the "Use of minimally invasive decompression techniques in spine tumor surgery," which was presented at the 27th annual meeting of the AANS/CNS section on the disorders of spine and peripheral nerves at Phoenix, AZ 2011. His publications include "Neurobiologic changes in the hypothalamus associated with weight loss after gastric bypass" in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, "Neuro-Hormonal Pathways Regulating Food Intake and Changes after Bariatric Surgery" in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, and "A surgical rat model of human roux-en-Y gastric bypass" in the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery.

 

Dr. George is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
