DR. ALAN MECHANIC

Alan Mechanic, M.D., F.A.C.S., is a Board Certified Neurosurgeon who specializes in spinal surgery, brain tumors and trigeminal neuralgia. Dr. Mechanic is the Chief of Neurosurgery at the Huntington Hospital in Huntington, NY, and brings more than 20 years of Neurosurgical experience to the practice.

 

Dr. Mechanic received his undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Arts, from Columbia University and was a Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Texas Sensory Sciences Center in Houston, Texas. He received his Medical Degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Mechanic served as Intern in Internal Medicine at Brown University in Providence, RI, and as a Surgical Resident at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. Dr. Mechanic completed a Neurosurgical Research Fellowship and Residency at the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and was appointed Chief Resident in his final year. Dr. Mechanic was a co-recipient with the Hahnemann University Spinal Cord Injury Study Group of the Volvo Award of The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies in 1985.

Dr. Mechanic’s professional interests include the surgical treatment of herniated lumbar and cervical discs, spinal stenosis, trigeminal neuralgia and brain tumors including gliomas, meningiomas and pituitary tumors. He has extensive experience with minimally invasive surgical techniques including minimal access spinal surgery, microneurosurgery, stereotactic neurosurgery, endoscopic neurosurgery and stereotactic radiosurgery.

 

Dr. Mechanic was the first neurosurgeon on Long Island to employ minimally invasive endoscopic techniques in the treatment of pituitary tumors.

 

Dr. Mechanic is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In 1995 he was appointed a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the New York University School of Medicine. He has frequently lectured at professional conferences on a variety of neurosurgical topics and has co-authored articles in peer reviewed medical journals on spine trauma, stereotactic neurosurgery and trigeminal neuralgia.


Dr. Mechanic has been listed as one of America’s Top Doctors in the past eleven editions of the Castle Connolly Directory. Physicians listed in the Castle Connolly Directory are selected based on peer nomination and extensive research by a physician directed research team, and represent the top 1% of all physicians in the United States.


Dr. Mechanic is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Medical Association, New York State Neurosurgical Society, Medical Society of the State of New York, Nassau County Medical Society and the Nassau Academy of Medicine. Dr. Mechanic is the current Chairman of the Nassau Surgical Society Section of Neurosurgery.
