John Pile-Spellman, M.D., F.A.C.R., is a neurosurgeon board certified in radiology at Neurological Surgery P.C., in Lake Success on Long Island. A recognized international leader in interventional neuroradiology, Dr. Pile-Spellman specializes in the diagnosis, management and treatment of cerebral aneurysms, strokes, tumors, vascular malformations, as well as the development of image-based services.
Dr. Pile-Spellman received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA. He completed some neurosurgical training at Tufts New England Medical Center and a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. He then completed fellowships in Neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and in Interventional Neuroradiology at New York University Medical Center, New York, NY. He was a visiting fellow in Endovascular Neurosurgery at the Kiev Neurosurgical Institute, Kiev, Ukraine, USSR. Among his many honors are membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Society, the Sadek Hilal Faculty Research Award at Columbia University and being selected by the Castle Connolly Guide to America’s Top Doctors and Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area from 2001 to 2010.
Dr. Pile-Spellman has over 25 years of experience in developing high-impact, clinically relevant imaging and treatment paradigms through clinical care, research mentoring, and organizational leadership.
Dr. Pile-Spellman and his fellow neurosurgeons at Neurological Surgery, P.C., provide world-class neurological care to a high volume of patients. As a result, the Long Island neurological group has extensive experience treating both common and rare neurological diseases with the latest minimally invasive techniques and nonsurgical alternatives.
Prior to joining Neurological Surgery, P.C., Dr. Pile-Spellman was Vice-Chairman of Research and Director of Interventional MRI at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He continues his research activities at Columbia University’s School of Engineering in the Biomedical Engineering Department. He has been an attending radiologist and Director of Academic Interventional Neuroradiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Pile-Spelling has been selected repeatedly as one of “America’s Top Doctors” from 2001 to 2014 by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. As a “top doctor,” he is in the top 1% of all physicians in the United States. The selection of “America’s Top Doctors” is based on peer nomination and extensive research by a physician-directed research team. He has also been included in New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors in New York” list from 2002 to 2014.
Dr. Pile-Spellman’s many professional honors include receiving the Saddek Hilal Faculty Research Award from Columbia University as well as membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. John Pile-Spellman’s Neurosurgery Education
Long Island neurosurgeon Dr. Pile-Spellman is a graduate of the University of South Dakota and received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. He completed both a residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
While on sabbatical from Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Pile-Spellman completed a second fellowship in interventional neuroradiology at New York University Medical Center, New York, NY. As a world-renowned specialist in neuroradiology, Dr. Pile-Spellman has been published in more than 160 peer review journals and has served as a reviewer for many academic publications, including Stroke, The Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow, Radiology, and The Lancet. He has been an investigator in at least six pivotal, clinical trials for endovascular treatment, and has numerous patents for endovascular treatment devices and advanced diagnostic imagery.
Dr. Pile-Spellman is a member of more than 20 professional organizations and societies, including the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASN), the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM), the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), and American College of Radiology (ACR).
