Discectomy Surgery Procedure

If you have a herniated disc that is putting pressure on your lower spine, called the lumbar region, a discectomy might be the perfect solution for you. This minimally invasive technique can improve your quality of life where other methods have failed.

What Conditions Does a Discectomy Surgery Procedure Treat?

A discectomy is a surgical procedure used to treated herniated discs that are causing tension on the spinal cord or nerve root. Herniated discs can be referred to as a slipped disc, bulging disc, torn disc or even a ruptured disc. If your doctor has diagnosed you with any of these issues in the lumbar region of your spine, a discectomy might be able to finally give you the relief you are looking for.

Herniated discs can cause pain to radiate from your spine out to your arms and legs. This can impede regular movement like walking or even standing. If medication or physical therapy are not working, our award-winning multi-disciplinary team of neurosurgeons might recommend a discectomy. Come into our offices in the New York area today to see what our highly skilled physicians can do for you.

What Is the Discectomy Surgery Procedure?

Through the use of endoscopy, a discectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows most of our clients to leave the hospital the same day. Our surgeons will use an epidural or localized anesthesia to begin the surgery for spinal decompression. With the use of a fluoroscope, a specialized X-ray machine, they insert an endoscopic needle to begin removing disc tissue in the spine.

Just enough tissue is removed to allow space for the herniated disc to slide back into its appropriate location. After the herniated disc is back in place, a laser will be used to close the spot where the disc bulged from. Recovery from the procedure is typically quick, due to no bones or muscles being cut during the surgery.
