What Conditions Does Motor Cortex Stimulation (MCS) Treat?

Motor cortex stimulation, commonly referred to as MCS, is electric brain stimulation used to treat chronic pain conditions that have not responded to other pain relief treatments.

These conditions include:

  • Chronic Refractory Pain
  • Post-Stroke Pain
  • Atypical Facial Pain
  • Dysphagia
  • Neuropathic Facial Pain
  • Intractable Pain
  • And other nerve or brain injury pain

What Is a Motor Cortex Stimulation (MCS)?

Motor cortex stimulation is an electrical stimulation surgical technique where electrodes are implanted onto the primary motor cortex. This is done through a small craniotomy. Your brain will be mapped using an MRI to give our neurosurgeons the precise location of where the electrodes will be placed. Once in place, they will be attached to a battery-operated neurostimulator.

The neurostimulator will help stimulate the places in your brain that control pain signals. This is done through the use of an external radio transmitter. It is theorized that MCS direct brain stimulation helps with pain relief due to it assisting in the release endogenous opioids in the brain.

After the surgery, it might take up to six months for the full effects to take place. This surgery is not meant as a cure for the pain or problems you are experiencing, but it may be a way to significantly improve your symptoms.
