ROCKVILLE, CENTRE, NY– Zachariah M. George, M.D., a dual-trained, board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive surgery of the spine, has joined NSPC Brain & Spine Surgery (NSPC) (NSPC), one of the Northeast’s largest private practices of leading neurosurgeons and allied specialists.  Dr. George is a resident of Smithtown, New York.  He sees patients at NSPC’s offices in Commack and West Islip, and is affiliated with a number of leading Long Island hospitals.

“With the addition of Dr. George to our practice, we have further deepened our ability to handle any kind of adult or pediatric spine problem, no matter how complex or rare,” said Michael H. Brisman, M.D., F.A.C.S., a senior partner at NSPC Brain & Spine Surgery (NSPC) “Our patients can be assured that they will receive university-level spine care, right in their backyard.”

One of the largest and most highly specialized private practices in greater New York, NSPC Brain & Spine Surgery (NSPC) has 32 affiliated physicians including 22 neurosurgeons, 14 of whom specialize in adult or pediatric spine surgery.  NSPC’s fellowship-trained surgeons perform the latest minimally invasive and open procedures for spinal conditions that range from common disorders such as spinal stenosis and herniated discs, to serious conditions that include spinal tumors and spinal deformities.

“It’s rare to see a large group of neurosurgeons who work so cohesively, while being able to provide leading edge, super-specialized care for even the most serious conditions,” said Dr. George.  “NSPC’s patients also benefit from continuity, as surgeons stay with the practice for many years.  I look forward to adding to the practice’s ability to deftly handle any kind of neurosurgical case.”

A dual-trained neurosurgeon specializing in the spine, Dr. George is trained in both neurosurgical and orthopedic approaches to spine surgery.  This specialized training enables him to work expertly on such conditions as spinal tumors, while also implanting instrumentation used in orthopedic spinalsurgery.  His spine deformity training allows him to treat both pediatric and adult deformities such as scoliosis, kyphosis and spondylolysis.

Dr. George has special expertise in both complex and minimally invasive spinal surgery, which uses smaller incisions and leads to shorter hospital stays, fewer complications and less post-operative pain.  He is trained in the use of the latest minimally invasive tubular retraction systems to treat herniated discs, degenerative spinal disease and spinal tumors.

Dr. George also has expertise in cervical laminoplasty, total disc arthroplasty (disc replacement) and dynamic stabilization techniques as alternatives to spinal fusion. He employs the latest technologies in spinal interbody fusion including direct lateral (XLIF, DLIF) and trans-sacral (AXIA-LIF) approaches, in addition to other fusion techniques such as PLIF, TLIF and ALIF.

Dr. George received a B.S. in Biology, summa cum laude, from the University at Albany. He was awarded his medical degree by Upstate Medical University, where he received the Excellence in Scholarly Research Award from Alpha Omega Alpha. At The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan,Dr. George completed his internship in the Department of Surgery, then served as resident and chief resident in the Department of Neurosurgery.  He subsequently completed a fellowship in complex orthopedic spine surgery at theBeth Israel Medical Center: Spine Institute of New York.

During his neurosurgical training, Dr. George conducted clinical research on the use of minimally invasive decompression techniques in spine tumor surgery. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. George is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
