If you are suffering from chronic back pain due to degenerative disc disease in your lower back, or lumbar vertebrae, the AxiaLIF® procedure might be the solution you are looking for. Come into our New York medical facilities for a consultation with our highly trained team of spine doctors to see what we can do to improve your quality of life.
An axial lumbar interbody fusion is a procedure that is used to treat damaged discs located in the lower back. Damage is typically related to issues stemming from a degenerative disc located between the L5 lumbar vertebrae and the sacrum. This damage can lead to a herniated disc causing further discomfort and even possible numbness.
Other conditions that might benefit from the AxiaLIF® surgical treatment, depending on the location, are spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis.
The AxiaLIF® procedure is a minimally invasive spinal fusion technique using the 3D Axial Rod. During this procedure, you will be put under general anesthesia in order to prevent movement during the surgery. Your surgeon will be making a small incision near your tailbone, or coccyx, in order to access the spine without damaging or cutting any major tendons, nerves or muscles.
Our spine surgeons employ the latest technology for a minimally invasive spine surgery. These innovative techniques cause less damage to muscle and tissue, limit blood loss, and decrease your recovery time.
To reach the disc for removal, your surgeon will drill into your sacrum with the guidance of a fluoroscopic X-ray machine. Your disc will be hollowed out and replaced with bone growth material that will grow through the disc and help fuse the spinal vertebrae. Additionally, a hole will be drilled into vertebrae above the damaged disc to allow for the insertion of a 3D Axial Rod. The rod will help you recover any height loss that was due to the flattened disc by separating and stabilizing the vertebrae.
Your surgeon might recommend the need for additional screws to be placed in the spine to secure it. Most often you will be released within a couple days of the surgery and have a recovery period of 6 to 12 weeks. Some movement will be restricted to facilitate a proper fusion by minimizing stress on the spine.
