Sacroiliac Joint Steroid Injection

A sacroiliac joint steroid injection is a minimally invasive technique in which a needle that contains a combination of pain relieving drugs and steroids is inserted into the patient.

This injection is done using local anesthetics and the guidance of a fluoroscopy x-ray machine. The steroids help facilitate the reduction of swelling and inflammation within the joint, which when combined with anesthetics can provide immediate pain relief.

What Conditions Does a Sacroiliac Joint Steroid Injection Treat?

The sacroiliac joint is a shock-absorbing structure which connects the sacrum to the spine. If this joint moves too much or too little, it can become inflamed and cause leg and lower back pain. This inflammation is referred to as sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

When patients have this type of pain, a sacroiliac joint steroid injection may be ordered by the doctor as a way of administering pain relief along with getting confirmation of a diagnosis of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. If immediate pain relief is achieved through this procedure, it provides a clear identification that the sacroiliac joint is the source of the problem.

A sacroiliac joint steroid injection does not necessarily treat the joint dysfunction. It can provide pain relief, ranging from months to even a year, for the patient in order to facilitate physical therapy to help solve the joint issue.

If you are suffering from chronic leg and lower back pain, a consultation with our award-winning board certified physicians can help guide you in finding out if a sacroiliac joint steroid injection is right for you. Since the pain from sacroiliac joint dysfunction often mimics the same feelings of sciatic nerve pain, it is often helpful to try this steroid injection. This innovative technique administered by our fellowship trained doctors can be the first step in your road to pain relief and recovery.
