About Dr. Cohen

Benjamin R. Cohen, M.D., F.A.A.N.S., F.A.C.S. is a board certified neurosurgeon specializing in spinal surgery. His practice includes revision spine surgery, adult scoliosis, and the treatment of spinal tumors and infection.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Cohen received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Temple University. He received his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School, where he was honored as the McGraw Hill Book Company “Outstanding Student;” Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society, junior selection; John J. Sheinin Research Award, and Broad of Trustees Scholarship Award.

Dr. Cohen completed his general surgery internship and served as a neurological surgery resident at the Albany (NY) Medical Center. While there, he received the House Staff Scholarly Research Award. Dr. Cohen subsequently completed a fellowship in complex spinal surgery at the University of Alabama.

An author or co-author of numerous articles published in the fields of neurosurgery and complex spine surgery, Dr. Cohen has also given many presentations in these areas as well. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.).

Dr. Cohen’s professional memberships include the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, Nassau County Medical Society (NCMS), The Nassau Surgical Society, American Medical Association (AMA), and the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY). He is a fellow candidate of the Scoliosis Research Society. Dr. Cohen also serves on the editorial board of the spine journal: Surgical Neurology International.

For more complex cases, including treatment for adult scoliosis and spinal deformities, Dr. Cohen partners with Marc Agulnick, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon, and Thomas Davenport, M.D., a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon. Although each doctor is a partner in their own practice, Dr. Cohen has learned that this team approach optimizes patient care and produces better surgical outcomes.
