What Is a Lumbar Fusion?

Lumbar fusion is the surgical joining of two vertebrae in the lumbar spine (lower back), which permanently inhibits movement between the two vertebrae. A bone graft is typically used in this procedure to fuse, or join, two vertebrae. Your surgeon may also use screws, rods or plates to hold the vertebrae in place. The aim of back fusion surgery is to help decrease pain while maintaining function in a damaged or diseased lumbar spine.
