Micro Endoscopic Discectomy

If you have been using conservative methods to treat your herniated or sciatic lumbar disc pain without positive results, a microdiscectomy might be the solution for you. This minimally invasive back pain treatment is used to partially remove the herniated disc, without needing to fuse or wire the vertebrae or use an artificial disc replacement.

What Conditions Does Micro Endoscopic Discectomy Treat?

A micro endoscopic discectomy treats conditions that cause discs in your spine to herniate, therefore causing significant spinal pain. This pain can even radiate out to the arms and legs causing a lower quality of life for people suffering from these issues. If you are living with chronic back pain, come into our Long Island, NY area treatment facilities to meet with one of our spine doctors about which option right for you.

What Is a Micro Endoscopic Discectomy?

A micro endoscopic discectomy, also referred to as a microdiscectomy or selective endoscopic spine surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure where an endoscope is used to facilitate the removal of a herniated disc. Through the use of a guidewire and fluoroscopic X-ray machine, our team of surgeons will insert a hollow tube that will allow an endoscope and other minimally invasive tools access to your spine and herniated disc.

Soft tissue and bone will be removed in order to give the spine surgeon access to the disc. The pinched nerve roots will be pulled to the side in order to prevent damage during the procedure. Once the portion of the disc that has herniated is removed, the tube will be pulled out allowing the nerve and surrounding tissue to close up the area. Due to the minimal invasiveness of this surgery, only a small bandage is needed on the site of the needle entrance.

This is typically an outpatient procedure done in one day, allowing most patients to be able to return home the same day. Most often rehabilitation and a 6-week recovery period are prescribed for optimal results.
